"THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO DO IT, IS TO DO IT."

- AMELIA EARHART

.

Following the Woman's Air Derby in 1929, Amelia held a meeting for licensed female pilots. During this time there was a total of 117 licensed female pilots and 99 showed up.For those that attended there was an interest in forming a group; Ninety-Nines.

The Rio Colorado 99s is a chapter of the International Ninety Nines and is located in Lake Havasu City, AZ. Our chapter originally began on 1/23/1981, as the London Bridge / Havasu chapter. There were 7 active members and  Betty Wright was Chairman and Martha Frank was Vice Chairman. The London Bridge Chapter was renamed on 9/17/1993, to the current Rio Colorado 99s. The decision was based on the fact that the membership was not only for Lake Havasu City, but Bullhead City, Parker and the surrounding cities on or near the Colorado River. The chapter felt that Rio Colorado was a more appropriate fit. The Chapter Chairman at that time was Tookie Hensley.

Today our chapter is extremely involved in the flying community and we participate and hold several fundraising events; pancake breakfasts, poker runs, spot landing competitions, flying companion seminars, air derby’s, Havasu 600 and other educational, fun flying events throughout the years. We strive to spread the love of aviation to those interested and encourage those who want to learn.

We are proud to be home of the famous Havasu 600 Air Race which was modeled after Claire Walter's "Palms to Pines" Air race that was established in 1970 and ran for 40 years. The Havasu 600 Air Race is our primary fundraiser for training scholarships.

Each year the race will start in a different location with a course of approximately 600 nm. The race will terminate each year in Lake Havasu City, AZ.

In the photo below is Tookie and Don Hensley. Tookie was a charter member of our chapter and our original race coordinator. Racing was a passion for Tookie and Don so we continue racing each year in their honor and memory as the "Don and Tookie Hensley Memorial Race".
