Jay Sylvester was a scholarship recipient last year and put it towards acquiring his Private Pilot Helicopter certificate. He earned that license on March 17, 2019. Jay is a captain for the LHFD currently, but his goal is to earn a pilot seat on Search and Rescue Helicopter. Jay's commitment to this goal is shown by his selling his house in 2018 to be able to start pilot training, and traveling to Las Vegas every week to train (while basically "camping out") and then commuting back to continue working as a fireman here in Lake Havasu. Jay has continued with his helicopter training after receiving his Private Pilot, completing his Instrument Rating Helicopter just a few days ago on Nov 7th, 2019! The Rio Colorado 99s are happy to present the Don and Tookie Memorial Scholarship 2019 to Jay Sylvester to continue training to acquire his Commercial Helicopter rating.
Amanda received her Private Pilot certificate in 2019, and has been flying continuously. As she earns her hours as PIC she wants to give back by donating flight time to help rescue animals, and participate in Angel Flight. She plans on joining the Civil Air Patrol and become a Mission Pilot to assist the community. She has applied for this scholarship with the intention of earning her Instrument rating. Her long term goal is to go on to obtain Single and Multi engine Commercial, and become a Flight Instructor. Amanda says that aviation has given her a new purpose, and never imagining it would be something she would love, it has now become a part of who she is.
The Rio Colorado 99s are happy to award the 2019 Don and Tookie Memorial Scholarship to Amanda McDougall to continue training for her Instrument Rating.
